Tanya Bindra is a filmmaker and producer based between Los Angeles and New York, working across premium nonfiction television and feature documentaries.
She is currently producing a documentary series for CNN exploring music history through unprecedented access to the Universal Music Group archives. Her recent credits include Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time (National Geographic | Disney+, 2025), a five-part documentary series executive produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media and directed by Academy Award-nominated director Traci A. Curry. The series won a Critics Choice Documentary Award and earned four Emmy nominations, as well as Peabody and Independent Spirit Award nominations. Additional credits include the feature documentaries Still (Apple TV+ | Sundance, 2023) and 2nd Chance (Showtime | Sundance, 2022), as well as the narrative short Hustle Mode (Vimeo Staff Pick | New/Next Film Festival, 2024).
Tanya began her career as a photojournalist and cinematographer, spending over a decade reporting from over 25 countries. She got her start as a stringer for the Associated Press in West Africa before contributing to publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Al Jazeera, as well as humanitarian campaigns for UNICEF and Médecins Sans Frontières. Her reporting spanned breaking news, culture, politics, migration, conflict, and humanitarian emergencies across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and the war in Mali.
Tanya’s background in journalism continues to inform her instincts and approach to filmmaking. She is drawn to investigative, character-driven stories that combine intimate vérité with ambitious archival storytelling grounded in historical context. She enjoys leading projects from early development through delivery and is particularly interested in stories that reveal larger cultural and political questions through deeply personal narratives.
Alongside her documentary work, she maintains an independent photography and moving-image practice exploring the intersections of spirituality, diaspora, and identity.
She holds a bachelor's degree from McGill University and is a member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia and Video Consortium.
