As New York City begins reopening and the cloud of the coronavirus slowly lifts, we wanted to ask how essential workers will be remembered. Nearly 1 million risked their lives every day to perform the often underpaid and undervalued labor needed to keep the city running, and yet many are still struggling to get by. This film is a photographic meditation of sorts on the idea that essential workers are first and foremost essential people. It is their personhood, their dignity, and their freedom that is essential to our society, not simply their work.
